It's located about 3 hours from Levi City. We will first visit the famous Silver gallery/workshop JUHLs, then go visit a local Saami reindeer camp for the authentic experience. Silver Gallery JUHLs is a life's work of Frank and Regine Juhls. It all started in the 1950s when the couple began to take on work repairing Sami silver jewelry, none of which had been made by the Sami; it had found its way north through trade. The silver gallery building is full of surprises, such as the little hen and sheep barn, separated from the exhibition only by a glass wall. One room is devoted to the Juhls family's travels in Afghanistan where they found a nomad culture that bore many similarities to the Saami culture. A small wing is also a museum for old objects that were discarded in the fifties and sixties when plastic and steel came into vogue. The old barn on the property once served as a stopover for travellers crossing this part of Lapland. The building is still there. The farm is run by Johanna, her mother and their team. Johanna has Sámi roots and carries that heritage into every part of the visit — not as a performance, but as the actual context in which her family has kept reindeer for generations. 3 km reindeer sleigh ride through snowy forest A 3 km route through snowy forest along the Ounasjoki River, pulled by reindeer at the unhurried pace of traditional Arctic travel. The ride takes approximately 30 minutes. This is the longer sleigh option at this farm — enough time to stop noticing the cold and start noticing the forest. Lichen feeding in the reindeer corral — reindeer therapy After the ride, guests enter the reindeer corral. The food handed out is the reindeers’ favourite delicacy — lichen, a natural Arctic plant they eagerly nibble like candy. The calves come close, sometimes close enough to touch. Moving slowly through the corral, there is time to interact with the animals, photograph them at close range and watch how they behave around people. Some approach readily; others keep a polite distance. These are semi-wild animals, and that natural shyness is part of what makes the contact meaningful when it happens. Johanna and the team call this the “reindeer therapy” part of the day — calm, unhurried, grounding. Ounaskievari farmhouse — hot drinks, pastries and reindeer herding traditions The visit ends inside the warm farmhouse: hot drinks — berry juice, coffee or tea — homemade pastries, and a short presentation on reindeer herding. Johanna covers the daily work of a herder, the seasonal calendar, the Sámi roots of her family and what the long-term relationship between a family and their herd actually looks like. There is time to ask questions, connect with the culture and browse local souvenirs before the return to Levi. After the ride, guests enter the reindeer corral and feed the young calves their favourite delicacy — lichen, a natural Arctic plant they eagerly nibble like candy. However, the most important thing is to enjoy the tranquillity and silence of the wintry forest. A possible catch will be prepared for a tasty snack by the campfire – have you ever tasted fish that is this fresh? INCLUDED PLEASE NOTE Pricing notes: Standard price is given for one person on a double snowmobile or in a sledge. Solo driving is available as a supplement. Child price is valid for a child under 140 cm seated in a sleigh. Insurance covers accidents with a maximum driver excess of 1500 €. You can buy a waiver for 20 € to lower the excess to 350 €. A waiver is available to buy only on the spot. According to Finnish law, to drive a snowmobile one should be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver's license of category B, T, A1, or A (i.e. car or motorbike). Alcohol tolerance is zero, drivers will have to pass an alcohol test before the safari. A second passenger can sit behind the driver on the snowmobile if the person's minimum height is 140 cm and his/her feet can fully reach the footrests. Otherwise, this person should be seated in the sled. The sled is always pulled by the guide's snowmobile. The sledge has an open top and can take up to 8 persons. It's advised that a small child seated in a sleigh is accompanied by an adult. The maximum speed limit is 60 km/h and 80 km/h on the lakes. Driving is only allowed on marked trails. After bike and helmet fitting and a brief safety introduction, the group sets off on a 15–20 km route through the Kätkä fell area. In Winter — Private Snow Trails Deep in the Wilderness In winter the group rides on private trails built and maintained by our team from early in the season — allowing fatbiking throughout the entire winter from mid-November, even when other areas are inaccessible. The route combines private trails, holiday area roads and cycling paths, crossing frozen marshes, open bog and quiet woodland roads beneath the foothills of Kätkä fell. No other riders on these trails. True Arctic solitude. In Summer and Autumn — Forest, Bog, Lake Views and Autumn Colour In summer and autumn the route runs through forest trails, holiday area roads, duckboard-covered bogs and fell foothills, with views over Aakenus and Kätkä fells, and along the peaceful shores of Lake Immeljärvi. In late September and October the landscape turns orange, red and yellow. The route also passes through the Kätkä and Pyhä fell area, offering a varied mix of forest, marshland and fell views. The guide leads the group to the best vantage points along the way. Campfire Stop at a Wilderness Lean-To or Kota Hut Midway through the tour, the group stops at a lean-to shelter or wilderness hut. The guide lights a fire — hot drink, a small snack, a moment to warm up and take in the surroundings before the return leg. In dry periods, open fires may be prohibited; in that case drinks and snacks are served without fire.
