With the guide, the group walks a 2–4 km loop through snowy forests and frozen swampland. The route is chosen for its balance of gentle movement and scenery — several good spots for photographing Lapland’s winter landscape along the way. The snowshoe trail lies entirely on private land. No public trails, no other visitors, no ski slope sounds in the background. Just the forest, the frost and the crunch of snowshoes on undisturbed snow. Part 2 Reindeer Encounter in the Secret Reindeer Forest After about an hour of snowshoeing, the trail arrives at an old pine and birch forest — privately owned by the reindeer herding family, completely secluded. This is what the program calls the Secret Reindeer Forest. No other visitors are assigned to this location. As the group steps in, curious reindeer begin to approach from the surrounding woodland, expecting food. The herder greets the group and gives a short introduction to the family’s long tradition in Lappish reindeer husbandry. Jussi and his family have kept reindeer across generations on this privately owned land. Animal welfare is the foundation of how the program is run: no rides, no tricks, no tamed animals performing for visitors. The reindeer live freely in the wilderness for most of the year and are only brought into the forest during winter for feeding and care. The herd is on its own terms — the herder is present to guide the encounter, not to stage it. Guests are handed buckets of feed — hay and specially prepared pellets — and move slowly through several natural spots in the forest, feeding the herd as it gathers. Some reindeer come close enough to touch; others keep their distance. That natural shyness is part of what makes the contact meaningful. Groups are kept small — maximum 10 people, two visits per day. This is what the program calls reindeer therapy: calm, unhurried, and genuinely unlike a staged animal encounter. Traditional Lappish kota meal by the open fire The kota is pre-heated and warmed in advance, ready for the guests. Our own kota chef serves a traditional Lappish kota meal. After spending time with the reindeer, the group moves into the warm kota. Wooden benches covered with reindeer hides, open fire. The lunch starts with the Northern Light Veloute — our kota chef’s signature soup, made fresh over the open fire and served with rieska, local flatbread toasted on the flames. The wilderness Michelin star. No actual stars, no white tablecloths, just a quietly exceptional bowl of soup in a reindeer-skin kota deep in the Arctic forest. It always tastes better than it has any right to. Then reindeer sausage: guests can grill over the open fire with the chef’s guidance — locally made, ecologically sourced. Then our chef serves thin Finnish pancakes with arctic berry jam and whipped cream. Coffee brewed in a pot on the fire, berry juice, herbal tea. While the guests enjoy their meal, the host carries on — more stories about the reindeer, the arctic way of living, and whatever questions have built up over the last hour. Lasso and diploma Before the return, guests try lasso throwing outside the kota. Each receives a personal diploma of Reindeer Herder’s Assistant. WHAT'S INCLUDED PLEASE NOTE MEETING POINTS WATCH VIDEO This snowmobile safari will give you a chance to ride your own snowmobile on the forest trails and enjoy the thrill of a husky ride. The beautiful wintery scenery whilst driving through the local forest area makes for fantastic photo opportunities. The tour ends up at husky camp, where the dogs are waiting to take you for a 5 km ride in their sleds. Warm drinks are served at the same time as you hear stories about the dogs, their breeds, pedigrees, and daily life in the kennel. You can pet the dogs and take photos. The riding time on snowmobiles is approximately 1 ½ hours and the time on the husky farm is 1 hour. The average speed during our tours is limited due to safety and traffic regulations. Two adults ride on one snowmobile, single riding supplement is extra. Total program is 4-5h. 3h is the actual time of the excursion. INCLUDED PLEASE NOTE Pricing notes: Standard price is given for one person on a double snowmobile or in a sledge. Solo driving is available as a supplement. Child price is valid for a child under 140 cm seated in a sleigh. Insurance covers accidents with a maximum driver excess of 1000 €. You can buy a waiver for 19 € to lower the excess to 299 €. A waiver is available to buy only on the spot. According to Finnish law, to drive a snowmobile one should be at least 15 years old and have a valid driver's license of category B, T, A1, or A (i.e. car or motorbike). Alcohol tolerance is zero, drivers will have to pass an alcohol test before the safari. A second passenger can sit behind the driver on the snowmobile if the person's minimum height is 140 cm and his/her feet can fully reach the footrests. Otherwise, this person should be seated in the sled. The sledge is always pulled by the guide's snowmobile. The sledge has an open top and can take up to 8 persons. It's advised that a small child seated in a sleigh is accompanied by an adult. The maximum speed limit is 60 km/h and 80 km/h on the lakes. Driving is only allowed on marked trails. It is simpler than block-stacking and just as effective. At -20°C (-4°F) outside, the interior of a properly built snow shelter holds just above freezing. Then the work begins. The building site is in Lappish nature, on the riverbank or on a frozen lake. The group works together through each phase: piling and compacting a large mound of snow, digging the entrance tunnel, crawling inside to hollow out the interior, and smoothing the walls and ceiling with a snow saw until the structure is stable and there is room to sit comfortably. It is real physical work — sustained effort in genuine Arctic cold. At the end, the guide lights the outdoor fire. Warm drinks and snacks are served. The safari house — a private forest clearing minutes from Levi — is already dark and quiet when the transfer arrives, and it stays that way. The route runs on a mix of public snowmobile trails and sections of privately owned land that no other operator here can access. On those private sections, there are no other headlights, no other engines. Just the trail, the trees on either side, and whatever the sky decides to do. No sleigh means no reduced pace. The group rides at 30–45 km/h. Midway through, the engines stop on a vast frozen swamp: complete darkness, no roads, no artificial light, 360-degree open sky. The guide pours hot drinks from a thermos. This is where people look up. After the break, the ride continues back through the dark forest to the safari house. Disclaimer — Snowmobile Safaris Damage to snowmobiles: All snowmobiles are insured as required by Finnish law, subject to the Finnish Motor Liability Insurance Act. Clients are liable for damage caused to snowmobiles. The tour price includes accident insurance with a maximum deductible of €950 per driver. The deductible can be reduced to €350 by purchasing a waiver (€35) at the time of booking or in the office before departure. If the driver does not follow the Finnish Road Traffic Act or guide’s instructions, all damages must be paid in full — waivers and deductibles do not apply. Personal injuries: Snowmobile programs can be physically demanding. Snowmobiling is not recommended for pregnant women or people with back or hip problems. Guests with heart disease, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy or other relevant conditions should consult a medical professional before participating. Each participant is personally responsible for assessing their ability to take part. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Driver’s licence: Finnish law requires snowmobile drivers to be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence accepted in Finland. Accepted licences: categories B, T, A1 or A issued in EU/EEA countries or countries party to the Geneva or Vienna Conventions, or otherwise officially recognised by Finland. Electronic licences are not officially accepted. A licence issued in a country not recognised by Finland is not valid for driving a snowmobile — the holder may only participate as a passenger. Alcohol and drugs: Tolerance is zero. Finnish law strictly prohibits driving a snowmobile under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers may be breathalysed before departure. Participation will be denied if under the influence; no refund applies. Speed and trails: The official speed limit for snowmobiles in Finland is 60 km/h. Driving is only permitted on marked trails. Please bring your driving licence — police patrols operate on snowmobile tracks. STG reserve the right to adjust routes, schedules or durations due to weather, safety or participant health. STG may discontinue the safari if a participant is considered a danger to themselves or others or is in poor health. Cold temperature and weather related modifications and cancellations Snowmobile safaris are cancelled when the outside temperature falls below -35°C (-31°F). In the event of cancellation, the tour can be rescheduled to another date or refunded in full if rescheduling is not suitable. For safaris involving children, the minimum temperature limit is -25°C (-13°F). Between -25°C and -35°C, safaris may be modified — for example, with a shorter riding distance or additional warming breaks. These modifications are made in the interest of guest comfort and safety and are not subject to compensation or refund.
