From the pickup point, the sled travels for 15 minutes across public tracks and then private land —open bog, then old-growth pine and birch forest — (into) the Secret Reindeer Forest. When the sled stops, the reindeer are already there, approaching because they know what the arrival means. The forest is privately owned by the reindeer herding family. No other visitors, no other groups. The animals live freely across a large area for most of the year and are only brought in to enclosures during winter for feeding and care. Animal welfare is the priority: no rides, no tricks, just the herd on their own terms with the herder present. Our Signature Reindeer Therapy Program in the Secret Reindeer Forest Approximately one hour in the forest, moving through several feeding spots with hay and pellets. Dozens of reindeer. The herder leads and talks throughout — about individual animals, the seasonal calendar, what keeping this herd demands day to day. Guests can photograph freely. Traditional Lappish kota meal by the open fire The kota is pre-heated and warmed in advance, ready for the guests. Our own kota chef serves a traditional Lappish kota meal. After spending time with the reindeer, the group moves into the warm kota. Reindeer skins on the benches, fire going. Guests can grill reindeer sausage — locally made, ecologically sourced. Then thin Finnish pancakes with arctic berry jam and whipped cream. Coffee brewed in a pot on the fire, berry juice, herbal tea. While the guests enjoy their meal, the host carries on — more stories about the reindeer, the arctic way of living, and whatever questions have built up over the last hour. We had a great tour with guide Steve and herder Jussi in the woods. Jussi picked us up with a snowmobil with a sleigh for 10 persons and brought us deeper into the woods. He told us a lot about his work as a herder, about the reindeers and the familycompany. We were allowed to feed the reindeers, they are semi-wild, so we stood in the middle of the herd. So great! The reindeers walk freely in the woods but when they hear Jussi coming, they come to see him (food :) ). After a while we got hot drinks, pancakes and sausages made by Steve in the cabin, on the fireplace. Charming. Very relaxed and interesting tour, especially because it's max. 10 persons. The tour on friday we would like to was fully booked but they arranged another one for us, a group of 6, a few hours later. Many thanks. It's located about 3 hours from Levi City. We will first visit the famous Silver gallery/workshop JUHLs, then go visit a local Saami reindeer camp for the authentic experience. Silver Gallery JUHLs is a life's work of Frank and Regine Juhls. It all started in the 1950s when the couple began to take on work repairing Sami silver jewelry, none of which had been made by the Sami; it had found its way north through trade. The silver gallery building is full of surprises, such as the little hen and sheep barn, separated from the exhibition only by a glass wall. One room is devoted to the Juhls family's travels in Afghanistan where they found a nomad culture that bore many similarities to the Saami culture. A small wing is also a museum for old objects that were discarded in the fifties and sixties when plastic and steel came into vogue. The old barn on the property once served as a stopover for travellers crossing this part of Lapland. The building is still there. The farm is run by Johanna, her mother and their team. Johanna has Sámi roots and carries that heritage into every part of the visit — not as a performance, but as the actual context in which her family has kept reindeer for generations. 3 km reindeer sleigh ride through snowy forest A 3 km route through snowy forest along the Ounasjoki River, pulled by reindeer at the unhurried pace of traditional Arctic travel. The ride takes approximately 30 minutes. This is the longer sleigh option at this farm — enough time to stop noticing the cold and start noticing the forest. Lichen feeding in the reindeer corral — reindeer therapy After the ride, guests enter the reindeer corral. The food handed out is the reindeers’ favourite delicacy — lichen, a natural Arctic plant they eagerly nibble like candy. The calves come close, sometimes close enough to touch. Moving slowly through the corral, there is time to interact with the animals, photograph them at close range and watch how they behave around people. Some approach readily; others keep a polite distance. These are semi-wild animals, and that natural shyness is part of what makes the contact meaningful when it happens. Johanna and the team call this the “reindeer therapy” part of the day — calm, unhurried, grounding. Ounaskievari farmhouse — hot drinks, pastries and reindeer herding traditions The visit ends inside the warm farmhouse: hot drinks — berry juice, coffee or tea — homemade pastries, and a short presentation on reindeer herding. Johanna covers the daily work of a herder, the seasonal calendar, the Sámi roots of her family and what the long-term relationship between a family and their herd actually looks like. There is time to ask questions, connect with the culture and browse local souvenirs before the return to Levi. During the 3 km ride we make a stop in the forest and warm up by a cozy fire in a forest kota hut — hot drinks, pancakes and sausages by the open fire, and stories about reindeer herding traditions and the everyday life of a herder. After the ride, guests enter the reindeer corral and feed the young calves their favourite delicacy — lichen, a natural Arctic plant they eagerly nibble like candy. Note: the private program does not include the main farmhouse session. Guests can use the warm facilities inside the main house. 2. Comfort+ program.
