After a short transfer, the engines start and we head into the quiet wilderness, following snowy trails and crossing frozen wetlands under the open sky. The evening starts with a pickup from Levi and transfer to our safari house. There, you’ll receive full thermal gear: a snowmobile suit, boots, mittens, helmet, balaclava, and wool socks - everything needed to stay warm and comfortable. Your guide will provide a safety briefing and basic driving instructions before we head out onto the trail. Each tour is different - some nights offer clear stars, others bring snowfall or, if conditions are right, the aurora borealis may appear overhead. A key highlight of this safari is access to private land . Much of the route runs on exclusive trails used only by our groups. This means no other traffic , allowing for a quiet and uninterrupted ride through the Arctic landscape. About halfway through the tour, we stop at a private wilderness hut (kota) , located in a wide, open swamp area. With 360-degree sky views and no light pollution, it’s one of the best spots in Levi for observing the Northern Lights. The location is far from roads, buildings, and artificial lights, offering ideal conditions for aurora viewing. Inside the hut, you’ll warm up by the fire, grill a sausage, and enjoy a hot drink while keeping watch on the sky. It can be rented separately before departure from the STG / Safarimarket office in Levi center at extra charge. If you want to rent the clothing, please be at least 20 min before pick up time to get dressed. It’s better to be dressed overly warm than “underdressed”, especially on longer safari programs. In cold weather, we recommend applying no-water based winter cream for face and cover open skin areas tightly. Bring gloves or better mittens, a good hat, hand/foot warmers and goggles. Please take off your gloves/mittens when touching the huskies. They love to play with gloves and might break it easily. Do not be afraid of dogs, as they are genetically friendly to people. According to Finnish law, to drive a snowmobile one should be at least 15 years old and have a valid driver's license of category B, T, A1, or A (i.e. car or motorbike). Alcohol tolerance is zero, drivers will have to pass an alcohol test before the safari. A second passenger can sit behind the driver on the snowmobile if the person's minimum height is 140 cm and his/her feet can fully reach the footrests. Otherwise, this person should be seated in the sled. The sled is always pulled by the guide's snowmobile. The sled has an open top and can take up to 4 persons. It's advised that a small child seated in a sleigh is accompanied by an adult. The maximum speed limit is 60 km/h and 80 km/h on the lakes. Driving is only allowed on marked trails.
