The mushers work with the dogs year-round, not only during safari season, and the kennel is built around daily care, training and close familiarity with the pack. Dog welfare shapes the way the kennel operates: spacious enclosures, regular rest days, training based on trust and positive reinforcement, and handlers who know the dogs individually. Each dog has its own role and character, and the introduction is part of the experience - not a formality. Self-drive husky safari through forest trails and open snow fields On arrival, the guide gives a full safety briefing and driving instruction: how to stand on the runners, how to brake, how to help the team when needed, and how to behave on the trail. The sled teams are prepared and ready before departure. The 5-6 km route runs through sheltered forest paths and open snow-covered fields. The forest sections feel quiet and close, with trees on either side; the open areas give more space, light and a wider Arctic landscape. It is a good middle-ground safari: longer and more complete than a very short taster ride, but still accessible for first-time mushers and families. Riding time is approximately 30-40 minutes. A midway stop allows driver and passenger to swap places. One sled usually seats up to 2 adults and 1 small child under 7, but final seating is always decided on site by the host based on safety, weight and group composition. At the kennel - free-run area, yurt and hot drinks After the safari, guests take a guided walk through the kennel and meet more of the pack. The visit also includes time in the free-run area, where some of the dogs can move and play freely. Guests can enter the area, pet the huskies and take photos at close range. The visit closes in a warm insulated yurt with a fire. Hot berry juice and cookies are served, with time to warm up and hear more from the hosts about sled dogs, training, daily kennel life and what it takes to run a husky team in the north. The ride lasts around 15 minutes, including a midway stop where driver and passenger can swap roles. After the ride, take a moment to thank your team and capture photos with the dogs. You’ll then enjoy a guided walk around the kennel, meeting more of the pack and learning about sled dog training, daily life, and the deep bond between mushers and their huskies. There’s also a special free-run area where some of the dogs can roam and play. Visitors are welcome to enter this space, pet and cuddle the huskies, and take relaxed, natural photos with them. It’s a unique chance to connect with the dogs in their own element. To end the experience, warm up in one of the two inviting huts: a stylish insulated yurt or a traditional Lapland kota with an open fire. In both settings, you’ll enjoy hot berry juice and cookies, while hearing more about husky life in the Arctic from your hosts. This kennel puts the well-being of the dogs first. The huskies live in spacious enclosures with plenty of room to run, rest, and socialize. Each dog receives daily care and attention, with rest days scheduled regularly to prevent overwork. A second passenger can sit behind the driver on the snowmobile if the person's minimum height is 140 cm and his/her feet can fully reach the footrests. Participation will be denied if under the influence; no refund applies. Speed and trails: The official speed limit for snowmobiles in Finland is 60 km/h. Driving is only permitted on marked trails. Please bring your driving licence — police patrols operate on snowmobile tracks. STG reserves the right to adjust routes, schedules or durations due to weather, safety or participant health. STG may discontinue the safari if a participant is considered a danger to themselves or others or is in poor health. Cold temperature and weather-related modifications and cancellations Snowmobile safaris are cancelled when the outside temperature falls below -35°C (-31°F). In the event of cancellation, the tour can be rescheduled to another date or refunded in full if rescheduling is not suitable. For safaris involving children, the minimum temperature limit is -25°C (-13°F). Between -25°C and -35°C, safaris may be modified - for example, with a shorter riding distance or additional warming breaks. These modifications are made in the interest of guest comfort and safety and are not subject to compensation or refund. Responsibility waiver: Scandinavian Travel Group is not responsible for changes, disruptions or unavailability affecting any third-party venue or location visited during this program, for whatever reason. Where a venue is unavailable, the guide will make reasonable alternative arrangements where possible. No refund is due for circumstances beyond our control. FLY TO LEVI The beauty of Levi can be seen in all its glory from the air. Magnificent mountain ranges and a sense of open space are the start of your holiday as you come in to land in Levi. As the scenery becomes more stunning, you realize you've arrived at your destination. Levi is one of the most convenient destinations for air travel. Kittilä Airport is only 14 kilometers away. A bus or taxi from the airport will take you to the center of Levi or wherever you are staying. If you need to wait for a scheduled bus or taxi to arrive at the airport, Scandinavian Travel Group advises you to book private transport in advance. Our driver will meet you at the arrivals hall, help you with your luggage and take you comfortably to your destination. Our fleet ranges from standard sedans to luxury minivans, and we also offer large coaches for larger companies. FLIGHTS TO LEVI FROM FINLAND Finnair operates daily flights from Helsinki to Kittilä all year round. In the high season, there are several flights each day. Finnair also flies to Rovaniemi from Helsinki, which is about 170 kilometers from Levi. One option is to fly to Rovaniemi and then arrive in Levi by regular bus or private transfer. FLYING TO LEVI FROM ABROAD During the winter season, Finnair operates direct flights from various European cities from December onwards. Charter flights come to Levi from Europe, Russia, and Ukraine during Christmas and New Year weeks. 2. GETTING TO LEVI BY TRAIN Levi is also convenient to get to by train. The most common train route starts in Helsinki. Traveling by train turns even a trip into a part of a holiday. Those who wish can easily take an overnight train from Helsinki to Kolari or Rovaniemi. By transferring to the train, you can seamlessly continue your journey when you arrive in Lapland. The nearest railway station to Levi is Kolari. When traveling by train to Rovaniemi, the options increase. The distance from Kolari to Levi is only 80 kilometers and from Rovaniemi, it is about 170 kilometers. There is a bus service to Levi after the arrival of each train. From Rovaniemi to Levi you can take a bus. It is also a good idea to combine a train journey to Levi via Rovaniemi with a visit to the official Father Christmas village on the Arctic Circle near Rovaniemi. In this case, we recommend that you book individual transport and a guide. 3. TRAVELLING TO LEVI BY BUS Those who value their time and ease of traveling get to Levi by bus. Instead, they divided time into eight periods: autumn-winter, winter, spring-winter, spring, spring-summer, summer, summer-fall and autumn. The four main seasons were thus supplemented by four "half-seasons". The warm moonlit nights of August refer to summer, but August carries a hint of autumn's crispness and piercing, melancholy light. Just a couple of cold, frosty nights and autumn-summer turns into autumn. When the leaves begin to fall and the lakes are covered in fog and ice at night, autumn has already arrived, although it's not quite autumn-winter yet. 1. Frosty winter Pakkastalvi ("frosty winter") is the first season of the year. The New Year's holidays are over, and it is dark... 2. Snow crust spring ...Cold and quiet until March-April, when hankikanto ("snow crust spring") comes soon after Lental. The amount of light increases significantly, although it is still dark and cold at night. 3. Breaking the ice As the light increases, everything in nature begins to wake up. With the first signs of spring, jäidenlähtökevät (literally "breaking the ice") begins: the snow is still on the ground, but the first plants are already appearing and reindeer are giving birth to cubs. WORLD CUP IN LEVI The World Cup in Levi is the start of the ski season together with the best slalom skiers in the world. On 21.11.2020 at 11:00 am the black slope of Levi turns into the heart of racing. At the same time Levi is filled with Lapland exoticism and you can just touch the buzz of the racing world. Finland, Lapland and the Levi World Cup attract a huge number of foreign viewers through various channels. Last year the event attracted 250,830,000 viewers and this year the chances are even better. Levi is poised to produce the highest level of television production dedicated to alpine skiing, thrilling races and snowy Lapland. Levi World Cup and FIS are reviewing the plan for this year's event. The opening race of the slalom World Cup, the Levi World Cup, is scheduled for 21-22.11.2020. The event organising committee is preparing for the special events that the FIS International Ski Federation is currently thinking about, both for the Levi event and for the whole ski tour. Excellent racing conditions in Levi are once again guaranteed by a large snow reserve, and the training season on the first slopes will be opened as early as 2.10.2020. There are about 150 cubic metres of snow under cover, waiting for colder weather to be spread on the slopes.
