Snowshoe trail through Levi’s winter forest

Snowshoes distribute your weight across the snow so you walk on top of it rather than through it. That is the whole principle, and it takes about five minutes to get used to. The guide meets the group in Levi village centre, fits everyone with snowshoes adjusted to their boot size, and walks a short distance to the trailhead at the base of Levi fell.

The route is a 2-4 km loop, the exact path chosen on the day based on snow conditions and the group’s pace. The trail winds through snow-covered woodland and across small frozen lakes. In the forest, the silence is the first thing you notice: no traffic, no lifts, no voices. Just the soft crunch of snowshoes underfoot and, occasionally, a breath of wind through the trees.

The guide reads the landscape as you go, pointing out animal tracks pressed into the snow, explaining how hares turn white in winter, where willow grouse shelter in deep frost, how the reindeer find lichen beneath the surface. Midway through the route, the group stops in the forest for hot berry juice. Steaming in the cold air. The kind of simple thing that feels good after an hour in the winter woods.

The tour finishes back in Levi village. No transport is used at any point, everything happens on foot from the centre and back.

Snowshoeing is accessible but not effortless: the terrain is uneven and the cold is real. Sturdy, warm winter boots are essential. Not recommended for guests with serious mobility limitations.
