WHY LEVI Levi is Finland's largest ski resort, with slopes available for skiers and snowboarders, beginners and advanced skiers, as well as children. The resort is located 170 kilometres north of Rovaniemi and the Arctic Circle. A wide range of activities to take advantage of the long days and midnight sun until the day gets shorter and the northern lights begin to shine! 8 SEASONS OF LEVI For the Laplanders and Saami in the olden days, four seasons were not enough. Instead, they divided time into eight periods: autumn-winter, winter, spring-winter, spring, spring-summer, summer, summer-fall and autumn. The four main seasons were thus supplemented by four "half-seasons". The warm moonlit nights of August refer to summer, but August carries a hint of autumn's crispness and piercing, melancholy light. Just a couple of cold, frosty nights and autumn-summer turns into autumn. When the leaves begin to fall and the lakes are covered in fog and ice at night, autumn has already arrived, although it's not quite autumn-winter yet. 1. Frosty winter Pakkastalvi ("frosty winter") is the first season of the year. The New Year's holidays are over, and it is dark... 2. Snow crust spring ...Cold and quiet until March-April, when hankikanto ("snow crust spring") comes soon after Lental. The amount of light increases significantly, although it is still dark and cold at night. 3. Breaking the ice As the light increases, everything in nature begins to wake up. With the first signs of spring, jäidenlähtökevät (literally "breaking the ice") begins: the snow is still on the ground, but the first plants are already appearing and reindeer are giving birth to cubs. The first stone flies appear on the snow by the quay. 4. light green summer As soon as the sun stops setting, the "light green summer" (keskiyönauringon aika), or midnight sun, begins. When the daylight hours are 24 hours long, the entire ecosystem lives in ecstasy. 5. H arvest The time of "harvest" (sadonkoryuunaika) begins when the willow blooms, when the days become shorter. 6. Ruska Then comes "ruska", or "colorful autumn", when the fiery autumn colors remind us that soon the earth will be covered with ice and snow again. 7. F irst snow And then the "first snow" (mustalumi) falls, which melts in the first few days of mild weather. The frosts that come after the "black snow" period freeze the ground. 8. Christmas The last season that completes the annual cycle is Christmas (joulukaamos), a period of constant darkness. The long polar nights are followed by the biggest holiday of the year: Christmas, a celebration of rebirth, light and parting with the old. There were good reasons for dividing time into eight seasons. By predicting the weather and performing seasonal chores according to weather signs, the northern way of life gave rise to a northern mindset - a mentality that imitates nature. Nature is in a state of constant change, simultaneously being in the current season and on the way to the next. This also applies to human beings: we are constantly in a state of flux, constantly moving forward and preparing for tomorrow. The structures and institutions of society change, but the mentality formed by nature remains virtually unchanged for many generations. Thus, the eight seasons have remained the same. In some cases, they still influence what we do, what we feel and what we think about. The eight seasons set the rhythm for this website as well. The pictures on the site and its colours also change according to the seasons. Levi World Cup and FIS are reviewing the plan for this year's event. The opening race of the slalom World Cup, the Levi World Cup, is scheduled for 21-22.11.2020. The event organising committee is preparing for the special events that the FIS International Ski Federation is currently thinking about, both for the Levi event and for the whole ski tour. Tripadvisor Google Facebook Husky Safari We traveled to Lapland with a group of 9 people and have not checked our options for activities before our arrival in Levi. That is why we decided to get some first-hand advice from STG. Although we had difficult conditions at the time (not enough snow), the people from STG tried everything to find good trips and activities for us. In the end, we decided to do a Husky Safari at a nearby Husky Farm and this trip was 1. very well organized 2. Gave some interesting information about Finland animals (huskies and wolfs in particular) 3. very good value for money. We actually did not expect to see reindeer, wolfs, or polar foxes at the Farm. However, all of these were present, which was absolutely awesome. Finally, we had a nice stay around the fire and ate some good sausages.
